Stall when Logging into Freenode

Reported by Troubledwine | November 1st, 2007 @ 04:59 AM | in 1.2.2

Hi,

I have the new release 1.2/8423 running under Leopard 10.5.

Since the upgrade, when logging into Freenode there's a 30 second pause as it auto-joins my channels which didn't happen in the past. I can't tell if it's just Freenode's servers as I really don't connect to too many other networks, but I thought I should mention it.

I'm running it on a PowerPC dual 2.0Ghz G5 with 2Gb of RAM.

I have a quad core 3.0Ghz Mac Pro with 4Gb of RAM at my office and the delay, if it occurs, isn't noticeable but then again it's a quad core 3Ghz machine so nothing is slow really. ;)

Sounds weird to say the least! Any particular server this occurs on? Any way for me to reproduce it? Thanks.

I take it it was fixed in 1.2.1 and you're not experiencing the problem anymore. Please do let me know if this is not the case.

Hi Nicolas. Thanks for taking a look at this. The problem was created with 1.2.1

It continues, however my situation has changed so it no longer effects me. I bought a new Mac Pro at home to replace my G5. So now I have a 2.8Ghz or better Xenon machine at both work and home and the problem isn't as noticeable on either of these, if it even exists at all.

On PowerPC however the problem, as described above, is when joining a server with lots of auto-join channels or just joining multiple IRC networks the client stalls with a beachball for up to 1 minute before giving the user control again.

Limiting the scrollback across sessions and disabling the logging feature helps a little but doesn't eliminate the problem

    To reproduce the problem:

Install Linkinus on a PowerPC based system

setup at least 3 IRC network login's (Linkinus, Freenode, EFFnet)

On Freenode auto join at least 5 channels or more, I have 8

    Quit Linkinus and IRC.

Re-launch Linkinus. Connect to the 3 IRC networks.

You'll notice when you join the freenode network the app beachballs for up to a minute.
